Our Mission
Our overall mission is to improve quality of life for people with type 1 diabetes by empowering them to engage with researchers, clinicians, and industry. Through our patient portal (Glu), BioBank and T1D Clinic Registry, we dramatically improve the availability and richness of information sharing – this simplifies the ways stakeholders collaborate in the research and treatment of type 1 diabetes.
Core Values
Our founding purpose is to help bridge a major gap in the type 1 diabetes community. The key stakeholders of patients, researchers, clinicians, and industry had little mechanism or ability to share data and collaborate on research and/or potential treatments. Through our patient portal, BioBank and T1D Clinic Registry, we have the means to change that. Our core values are intended to help our stakeholders and our employees work together with confidence, trust, and respect.
Independence – we recognize that our role in the type 1 community is to act as an independent conduit between patients, researchers, clinicians, and industry. As a non-profit organization, we have no vested interest in any particular treatments, drugs, or medical devices, but rather provide the means so that each stakeholder can better communicate, share data, and collaborate with one another.
Empowerment – we believe that individual patients have the power to improve the quality of life of all people with type 1 by sharing data with researchers, clinicians, and industry. We empower patients to share that data easily and efficiently, but always make it clear the choice to share is theirs alone.
Security – we recognize our responsibility to maintain the patient privacy. With their consent, we make patients’ data available to the other stakeholders, but their names and contact information remains strictly private unless they choose otherwise.
Quality – We expect employees to act with the highest level of standards in all aspects of our work. This not only includes our major systems such as distributing accurate information efficiently, securely, and at a nominal cost—but also includes day-to-day interactions. For instance, if a patient asks a T1D Exchange employee for medical advice, we will refer them to their doctor rather than attempt an answer for which we’re not qualified.
Respect – a respect for others is deeply embedded in the T1D Exchange. First and foremost is our respect for patients and their privacy. But our employees work with all our stakeholders and each other in a respectful manner.
Diversity - We welcome a variety of people and perspectives and are committed to an environment where employees and stakeholders of all backgrounds, cultures, and sexual orientation may succeed.
